Vineyard Haven, Mass., December 7, 1999--Wondering how to
control those pesky slugs without chemicals or how to
fertilize your tomato plants with natural nutrients? Get
your questions answered at the Charlotte's Gardens web site
.
BZ Riger-Hull, site owner and organic gardening pro, offers
tips and fields questions on the site and in Simple
Pleasures, her weekly e-mail newsletter covering gardening,
cooking and health topics.
Budding gardeners who visit the site will get the dirt on
numerous topics, including:
--Understanding the importance of soil pH,
--Cultivating citrus trees in containers,
--Controlling rabbits,
--Growing cover crops and green manures,
--Making the most of beneficial insects,
--Growing gorgeous roses and
--Using plants to attract hummingbirds.
Riger-Hull grows over 180 varieties of flowers and herbs on
Martha's Vineyard and sells the flowers--along with gourmet
food and gifts--locally, throughmailorder and online. In
1993, the Mass. Horticultural Society awarded her a
certificate for outstanding contributions to Martha's
Vineyard horticulture.
The gardening prowess didn't come overnight. "I was self
taught. I took different courses, read lots of books, got my
hands dirty, and made lots of mistakes that were all
valuable. My personal horticultural library contains over
300 books," she said.
It's hard work, but the rewards are motivation enough.
"Growing organically gives me a much healthier garden that
produces higher quality flowers, herbs and vegetables. It
may be a little more work sometimes but I like knowing that
I'm not poisoning myself, my daughter, other humans or
animals," Riger-Hull explained. "People are beginning to
understand the far-reaching consequences of using chemicals
and chemical fertilizers. Not just the direct effects on the
garden and people who eat it but long-term effects and
costs."
